I went into the Device Manager and low andbehold my sound card was no longer saying "Driver is enabled but has notbeen started" but rather "driver is enabled and functioning properly".
This is a problem we've been seeing a lot in my office over the last several weeks, usually manifesting as a complaint about the sound not working, and that patch usually I have you tried restoring your device to a known-good-audio working day? My own research has revealed that apparently I'm not alone with this problem. It didn't for me, and I ended up having to reinstall windows xp.
If that doesn't help, try reinstalling the drivers.
